Do I have to be an athlete to work with Carolina Performance?
No, Carolina Performance providers will work with non-athletes who are looking to improve the quality of their lives. Learning and applying sport psychology techniques, such as goal setting or imagery, can lead to enhanced performance in many non-sport domains (i.e., school, work, relationships). General mental health and psychiatric services are available at Carolina Performance.

My group or team is having a difficulty that does not fit into one of the seminar topic areas. How can Carolina Performance help us?
Our list of seminar topics include common examples of what other organizations have found helpful from Carolina Performance. All of our presentations are tailored for each group. After an initial consultation, we can discuss other seminars that may better meet your needs.

For seminars, can my group or team select topics from more than one category (ex: Nutrition from Life Skills, Performance Enhancing Drugs from Prevention Talks, and Goal Setting from Performance Enhancement)?
Absolutely. Carolina Performance would like to work with you to design a program that best suits your needs.

What is sport psychology?
A basic description of sport psychology is the mental side of exercise and sport. It deals with both a) how the mind (our thoughts and feelings) affects exercise and sports performance; and b) how exercise and sport participation affects well-being and personal development. The practice of applied sport psychology usually involves a combination of individual and group consulting or counseling, depending on the style of the professional conducting the intervention and the needs of the client. AAASP Certified Consultants and specially-trained licensed psychologists are typically the most competent practitioners in applied sport psychology. Although there are many specific concepts within applied sport psychology (e.g., goal setting, concentration, relaxation, imagery), the general goal is to teach athletes the mental skills necessary to perform consistently in training and competition and to help them realize their potential as people and athletes.

What is sport psychiatry?
Sport psychiatry is the application of the biopsychosocial model and a developmental perspective to the emotional and behavioral problems that athletes present. In treating athletes' problems, sport psychiatrists utilize psychotherapeutic techniques and pharmacotherapy based on the best clinical evidence. In order to provide appropriate and effective use of the treatment modalities, they need to have a specialized understanding of the athlete's subjective experience and lifestyle.
